Two Bad Ants

Author: Chris van Allsburg

Synopsis: Some ants find their way into a sugar bowl and plan to bring the spoils to their queen. Of the group two ants decide to stay behind with the sugar bowl. We get to experience human artifacts and behaviour from the view point of an ant. The next day their brethren find their way back to the sugar bowl and they fall inline going back to the colony.

Connections to Science:
I) A study on hive behaviour.
II) Many take hive behavour as counter example of Darwins sexual fitness because many ants to not get the chance to procreate.
III) ANThropology can be talked about from this view point.

Blueberries for Sal

Author: Robert McCloskey

Synopsis: This is the tale of Sal and her mother picking blueberries. They get mixed up with a bear and her cub (similar to trading spaces). They get back together with no trouble.

Connections to Science:
I) This tale talks about the preparations humans and bears make for winter.

A Colour of his Own

Author: Leo Lionni

Synopsis:
A chameleon is tired of not having his own colour. He travels around looking for one but he just keeps changing into the colours he sees around him. Once he finds another chameleon to help him share these colours he feels normal.

Connections to Science:
I) Using colour as a defense mechanism

The Very Busy Spider

Author: Eric Carle

Synopsis: This predictable text follows the story of a spider as she creates a web. On each page a different animal comes to ask the spider if she would like to play with them but she is too busy. At the end of the story she catches a fly in her web.

Connections to Science:
I) This book can be used to talk about the animal instincts of animals and why some make good pets while others don't.

II) Talk about he life food chain.

The Waterhole

Author: Graeme Base

Synopsis: This is a story about the various animals that survive around water holes.

Connections with Science
I) The illustration in this book are full of hidden images that you can ask the students to find. You can talk about how our brains are hardwired to see these images and to create faces from inanimate objects.

II) This could be a way to introduce ecosystems and the importance of water. What happens when the waterhole runs dry.

Who Lives in the Rainforest

Author: Nora Pelizzari

Synopsis: This is a flip up book where you get to discover the animals hiding behind the bushes. Flip the flap over to move the brush away.

Connection to Science
I) This might be a way to introduce young students to the forest of the animals. This can lead into talk about biodiversity of the fauna for older students.

The Little Penguin

Synopsis: The story fallows the birth and growth of a single emperor penguin. Through the process his body goes through changes as he becomes a grown emperor penguin.

Connections to Science:

I) Help students with their changing bodies.

The Gruffalo's Child

Author: Julia Donaldson
Art: Axel Scheffler

Synopsis: After being told about the big bad mouse the Gruffalo child goes on a walk into the woods to find the mouse. He meets many animals (snake, fox, and an owl). He meets a tiny mouse that looks good to eat but the mouse tricks him by casting a large shadow. The Gruffal child thinking it's the big bad mouse flees.

Connections to Science:

Things are not always as they seem. Using a light source get students to make objects to appear bigger on a wall. Ask them what happens to the image when the object moves closer or farther away?

Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears

Synopsis: This tale could be broken into two parts. The first is the propagation of one problem becoming a big problem as it follows the causal relationships that start with irritations of a mosquito. In the end, the effects are deadly for an owlet and in turn the sun doesn't rise. In the second part, the powerful lion leads the investigation into how the sun stopped rising in a fashion similar to the song head, shoulders knees and toes. In the end the mosquito is blamed and he runs away to buzz in the ear of a human that treats him justly.

Connections to Science:
I) This book could be used to teach causation.

II) To introduce many African animals.
