Synopsis:
This is a story about a monk who acquires two friends. At first the addition of another monk causes problems as they try to bring water to the monastery. A fire eventually rallies them together.
Connection to Science:
I) This story may be used to introduce the concept of perturbation. As small changes are added to a system things may become chaotic, but eventually things tend to become stable in the long run.
II) You could talk about the fire in the story as a catalyst and get students to compare this with catalyst in chemistry.
III) For a math class you could plot the amount of water at the monastery over time or the health of the garden, then get the students to locate on the graph the major events of the book.
